How can you expect them to learn English when they live in fear. Libraries have always reached out to the have-nots. Now, as individuals we need to urge our legislators to stop the raids on undocumented immigrants. We can't deport 12 or 13 million of them, but we can terrorize the whole group. Is that our purpose? We once persecuted the Chinese and tried to deport them. We put our Japanese-American citizens in concentration camps. We tried to deport our slaves. We abused the Irish, the Jews, the Italians when they were new immigrants. Have we learned nothing? Most of the immigrants are young, healthy, and hardworking. They need to have work permits, driver's licenses, and a chance for a better life. It will only happen if you encourage our congress to make it happen. These immigrants are learning English at a faster pace than any group before them. They are making a major contribution to our economy. They deserve decent treatment under the law. A recent New York Times editorial descirbes this as "The Great Immigration Panic." You can read it online.
