Lake County Library System has many volunteer opportunities in our 14 libraries. We encourage you to inquire at your local library about their specific needs. Lake County also has VolunteerLake which provides citizens the opportunities to use their knowledge, vigor, expertise and desire to benefit Lake County and themselves through volunteering.

Everyone should be aware that latinos are being hunted down and
deported. How can you expect them to learn English when they
live in fear. Libraries have always reached out to the have-nots.
Now, as individuals we need to urge our legislators to stop the raids
on undocumented immigrants. We can't deport 12 or 13 million of
them, but we can terrorize the whole group. Is that our purpose?
We once persecuted the Chinese and tried to deport them. We put our
Japanese-American citizens in concentration camps. We tried to deport
our slaves. We abused the Irish, the Jews, the Italians when they were
new immigrants. Have we learned nothing?
Most of the immigrants are young, healthy, and hardworking. They
need to have work permits, driver's licenses, and a chance for a better
life. It will only happen if you encourage our congress to make it happen.
These immigrants are learning English at a faster pace than any group
before them. They are making a major contribution to our economy.
They deserve decent treatment under the law.
A recent New York Times editorial descirbes this as "The Great Immigration Panic." You can read it online. They say that in years
to come we will be teaching our children about this period as a
shameful part of our history.

Hi there, from the red hills of South Georgia:
I love the blog, love what all of you are doing for books and authors and fans and readers down there in Central Florida, and do not want to sound at all like whatever I'm fixing to sound like, but my last name is Matturro--that's two t's and two r's. Bill (my husband) and I like to joke sometimes that the name is designed for maximum confusion as there's at least three perfectly reasonable ways to spell it. But the correct way is Matturro. Hope to meet lots of you down your way in just a few months. Thank you--Claire Matturro

I wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the Umatilla Library. The ladies who work there are always pleasant, knowledgeable and go out of their way to help me, without exception.

Usually there are 10-15 unsupervised youngsters in the library when I visit, but they are well-behaved and under control. I suspect it's because the librarians seem to know them all by name and most likely their families, as well.

Your web site has come a long way and is easy to access and very user-friendly.

Can you send me any information about volunteering or perhaps employment at the Umatilla Library?
