Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at the MLK Center in Mount Dora, sponsored by the W.t. Bland Public Library.

Tuesday, Febrauary, 24, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lady Lake Community Bldg., sponsored by the Lady Lake Public Library.

Mr. Corsair will discuss the complexities of an important, yet often overlooked chapter of Florida’s tumulous race relations in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The Groveland rape case made international headlines and forced America to deal with the disturbing reality of “guilty until proven guilty” when a white teenage bride accused four African American men of kidnapping and raping her.
Corsair examines the far-reaching impact of the “legal lynching”, which led to the Supreme Court ruling that rape was no longer a death-penalty offense.
In dozens of presentations to school children, Corsair examines an injustice rivalring Scottsboro, and in the process teaches powerful lessons of acceptance and tolerance.

What is the public perception of librarians – smart, helpful, polite? We help people find books and information in a welcoming environment rich in resources. And yet young and old still think of the stereotypical librarian with a bun, glasses, sensible shoes and pursed lips uttering “SHHH” to the noisy masses. A perception we all strive to change. Therefore it came as a bit of a surprise when a concern was expressed in the Orlando Sentinel, November 25, 2008. The Ticked Off column featured the following:

Ticked off! @ the stacked in the Lake library stacks

“The Lake County librarians wear revealing shirts. In a public office, they should be stricter on attire.” Of course this comment generated many immediate responses to the Orlando Sentinel website. Here are samples of the responses.

· AAARRRRGGHH from Tampa, FL says “Hey, I’m going to the Lake County library!”

· Pamela from Titusville, FL responds “You can join my husband. He’s on his way there now.”

· Pinkerton on the case from Orlando, FL adds “Hey, I can wear my tops how I like to. 1958 just called – they need you back!”

· I like Tonka from West Palm Beach, FL requests “Can someone post directions to the Lake County library? I wanna go check out some *** books.”

· And not to be outdone, Pamela from Titusville, FL responds “Straight out Highway 50 past Highway 27. Keep going straight until you see the sign that says “Downtown Clermont” Turn right and it’s on the left. You can find my husband there trying to pretend he doesn’t know how to check out books.”

The response to this brief statement was remarkable, much more than to your average well thought out library campaign. And as hard as we looked for that culprit with the risqué shirt, we could not find the guilty librarian. Professional attire is expected of anyone dealing with the public but perhaps librarians, influenced by thousands of years of knowledge and infinite imagination, should change the public perception and go with what works.

The USS Intrepid is a 27,000-ton Essex-class aircraft carrier that has sailed into harm’s way around the globe. At Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, she sank Japanese warships and endured kamikaze and torpedo attacks. She fought at Okinawa, surviving to be the recovery ship for America’s first astronauts and later returing to action in Vietnam.

The public is invited to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony this Monday (June 30), at 9 a.m., at the site of the new Cooper Memorial Library at Lake-Sumter Community College’s South Lake Campus. The facility is a partnership project of LSCC, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, the Friends of the Cooper Memorial Library and the University of Central Florida.

The new building will keep the name of the Cooper Memorial Library, in commemoration of the area’s first facility. Organized in 1906, the Clermont library dropped its 50-cents-per-family fee and become public in 1911. Its book collection moved to three different locations before Alice Cooper, president of the library board, offered to lease a building site. The 720 square foot structure, completed in 1914, was named after the Cooper family when it donated the land to the board in 1938. Sixty-six years later, the library needed more space, so it changed its address in 1980, and again in 2005.

The new 50,000 square foot facility, featuring wireless computer access, should serve the community and th two schools for years to come. LSCC and UCF students will not only benefit from the start-of-the-art reference and resource addition to the campus’ two current buildings, but also a bookstore, restaurant, three general and two computer classrooms, and a number of small and large group-study rooms with technology for practicing presentations. The community will enjoy full library services, including general access to computers, a 6,000 square foot children’s section and a separate area for teenagers.
